Kali Uchis’s new album “Red Moon in Venus” was released this past weekend and I am already obsessed! I’ve had the album on repeat all weekend and couldn’t help but feel inspired to create some macarons. In this post I’ll show you how I created gorgeous geode and butterfly macarons inspired by the album cover.
The Inspiration
I first saw Kali live on my birthday in February 2018. Her stage presence was amazing and since then I have been waiting to see her live again! I was so excited when she announced her new album and touring dates for 2023. The artwork for “Red Moon in Venus” is so visually pleasing, I couldn’t help but make some macarons inspired by it.
Honestly, it’s really hard not to get inspired by Kali. Her Instagram is filled with inspiration!

- Rock candy- linked here
- Butterfly mold-linked here
- White chocolate or colored chocolate melts
- Food coloring and edible glitter- linked here
Steps
- Bake some red macarons. Find my beginner French macaron recipe here. I also have an eBook on Italian Meringue Macarons that can be purchased here. For the macarons in this tutorial I used the Italian Meringue method. Details on how to achieve a deed red color for macarons is outline in my eBook.
- Create chocolate butterflies using a silicone mold and chocolate melts. For the blue butterflies I had some turquoise chocolate melts that I colored a bit darker with the Choc Elites by The Sugar Art in the color “Blue”. Then I colored white chocolate melts with the Choc Elite in Orange. I made a super light color of both the blue and orange to give the butterflies an ombre effect.
3. Crush the rock candy with a meat mallet or rolling pin to get a small pieces that will resemble gemstones. I used rock candy in baby blue, red, and clear which I colored orange with “Pumpkin” master elite and The Color Solution by The Sugar Art.
4. Attach the rock candy to the macarons with the leftover chocolate from the butterflies. Pipe some chocolate on top of the macaron in the way that you plan to place the rock candy. Work in small sections so that the chocolate doesn’t hared as you’re adding the rock candy.
5. Attach the butterflies to the macarons with some chocolate. Add black food coloring to the edges of the butterflies to give them some dimension. I used Choc Elite in “Black” by The Sugar Art.
6. Fill the macarons with a filling of your choice and finish by adding some edible glitter.
